How to Cut Porcelain Slabs for Benches and Showers

How to Cut Porcelain Slabs

Dry cutting is the best method for large slabs that are less than 30cm thick. Dry cutting involves using a diamond blade to make the initial cuts and then using a water jet machine to finish those shapes by grinding away any excess material in between your desired lines.

This is how we cut our porcelain slabs for countertops and benches:

• Draw out an outline of where we want to cut
• Use a diamond blade to make all our larger cuts
• Follow up with an abrasive-waterjetting machine until everything has been ground down nicely into what looks like one huge slab of porcelain tile

Marking Cut Lines

When cutting porcelain, it’s important to mark the cut lines to ensure the cuts are accurate. If you have access to expensive laser-leveling equipment, this is the best way to create straight lines.

Otherwise, there are a few options:

• Use a ruler and pencil to draw straight lines across the surface of your slab
• Mark each line with a permanent marker or pen so that it will be easy to see when cutting out pieces later
